Are Those Licensed & Certified Experts on Your Roof?
Every year we hear reports about unscrupulous contractors that show up at homes in the area unexpectedly. With offers of ‘free’ roof inspections and sometimes even claims that they will reimburse the homeowner for any insurance deductible or out-of-pocket expenses, there is always an owner looking to save a few bucks that fall for these tactics. Unfortunately, they tend to realize too late that the roofer is not licensed or certified, and sometimes not even with a legitimate roofing ‘company.’
The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) protects California consumers by licensing and regulating the state’s construction industry. Out of the 50 states, only 21 of them require roofing pros to be licensed, and California is one of them. The required license is known as the C-39 license and requires all applicants to have at least four years of roofing experience, must pass an exam and pay a licensing fee. Additionally, California also requires that roofing company owners must have workers’ compensation coverage, no matter if they have employees or not.
What is Roof Certification?
Separate from a home inspection, roof certifications are performed by professional roofing inspectors that access the roof, determine that the rooftop has a life expectancy of 1-3 years or more, and create reports on the following:
- The condition of the Roofing Material
- Possible Movement
- Soundness of Downspouts, Drains, and Gutters
- Ridges, Caps and Drip Edges
- Flashing Around Chimneys, Vents, Valleys, Roof Pipes and HVAC Unit Mounting
